Comprehensive Guide
ADA Home Accessibility Guide for Georgia
Everything you need to know about making your home accessible — modifications, costs, funding programs, and how to work with a certified accessibility contractor in Georgia.
Understanding Home Accessibility
Home accessibility means modifying your living space so that everyone — regardless of age, mobility, or disability — can move through it safely and independently. In Georgia, over 1.2 million adults live with a mobility-related disability, and the aging population is growing faster than the national average. Making your home accessible is not just compassionate — it's practical.
Common Accessibility Modifications
Bathroom Modifications
The bathroom is the most dangerous room in the home and the most common area for accessibility modifications:
- Walk-in Tubs ($3,000-$12,000) — Low-entry door, built-in seat, hydrotherapy jets, anti-scald valves
- Roll-in Showers ($5,000-$15,000) — Zero-threshold entry, fold-down bench, handheld sprayer
- Full Accessible Bathrooms ($8,000-$25,000) — Grab bars, comfort-height toilet, roll-under vanity, wider doorway
- Grab Bars ($150-$500 per bar installed) — Reinforced blocking in walls required for safe installation
Mobility & Access
- Wheelchair Ramps ($1,500-$8,000) — ADA slope of 1:12 minimum, handrails, non-slip surface
- Stair Lifts ($3,000-$8,000) — Rail-mounted chair that glides up/down stairs
- Vertical Platform Lifts ($10,000-$20,000) — Enclosed platform for wheelchair users
- FlexStep Platform Lift ($25,000-$35,000) — Revolutionary dual-purpose staircase/wheelchair lift. We are the exclusive Georgia installer
- Door Widening ($500-$1,500 per door) — Standard 32" doors widened to 36" for wheelchair clearance
Kitchen Accessibility
- Lowered countertop sections for wheelchair access
- Pull-out shelves and lazy susans for reach-limited individuals
- Lever-handle faucets and D-pull cabinet hardware
- Adjustable-height work surfaces
- Side-opening oven and front-control range
Funding Programs for Georgia Residents
VA Grants for Veterans
The Department of Veterans Affairs offers three grant programs for veterans with service-connected disabilities. These are grants, not loans — no repayment required:
- SAH Grant: Up to $109,986 for major modifications (ramps, accessible bathrooms, widened doorways, roll-in showers)
- SHA Grant: Up to $44,299 for adaptations to an existing home
- HISA Grant: Up to $7,256 (or $2,000 for non-service-connected) for improvements like grab bars and ramps
We prepare VA-formatted estimates and work directly with your VA case manager. Read our detailed VA Grants guide.
Georgia Medicaid Waivers
Georgia offers several Medicaid waiver programs that cover home modifications:
- CCSP Waiver: For adults 65+ and adults with disabilities. Covers home modifications for safety and accessibility
- NOW Waiver: For individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities. Covers environmental accessibility adaptations up to $15,000
- COMP Waiver: Similar to NOW but for individuals requiring more comprehensive services
- ICWP Waiver: For adults 21-64 with physical disabilities. Covers home modifications for independent living

The Aging in Place Approach
Aging in place means modifying your current home so you can live there safely as you age, rather than moving to assisted living. The key principle: modify your home before you need the modifications. Proactive changes are less expensive and less disruptive than emergency modifications after a fall or health event.
Our Aging in Place Checklist covers the essential modifications room by room.
Commercial ADA Compliance
For businesses and public accommodations in Georgia, ADA Title III compliance is a legal requirement. Common commercial modifications include:
- Accessible parking and signage
- Entrance ramps and automatic doors
- Accessible restrooms with ADA-compliant fixtures
- Elevator or lift installation for multi-level buildings
- Counter height adjustments for service areas
