How to Make Your Home ADA Compliant: Complete Georgia Guide

Making Your Home Accessible: Room by Room
Whether you are preparing for aging in place, accommodating a family member with a disability, or recovering from surgery, home accessibility modifications allow you to live safely and independently. Here is the room-by-room guide.
Entryways & Doors
- Doorways: Minimum 32" clear width (36" recommended for wheelchair access). Cost to widen: $500-$1,500 per door
- Thresholds: Remove or reduce to 1/2" maximum. Beveled thresholds for smooth transitions
- Hardware: Replace round knobs with lever handles throughout the home ($20-$50 per door)
- Entry: Zero-step entry or wheelchair ramp at main entrance
Bathrooms
- Grab bars: At toilet, shower entry, and inside shower. Must be anchored to blocking, not drywall ($150-$500 per bar)
- Toilet: Comfort-height (17-19" seat height) ADA toilet ($250-$600)
- Shower: Barrier-free roll-in shower or walk-in tub
- Flooring: Non-slip tile (coefficient of friction 0.6+)
- Vanity: Roll-under clearance for wheelchair users (minimum 27" knee clearance)
Kitchen
- Lowered countertop section (34" instead of 36" standard)
- Pull-out shelves in base cabinets
- D-pull cabinet hardware (easier to grip than knobs)
- Lever-handle faucet with single control
- Side-opening oven or wall oven at accessible height
Stairs & Level Changes
- Stair lifts ($3,000-$8,000) for ambulatory users who struggle with stairs
- FlexStep platform lift ($25,000-$35,000) for wheelchair users — dual-purpose stair and lift
- Vertical platform lifts ($10,000-$20,000) for porch or garage access
Funding Your Modifications
Many Georgia residents qualify for funding that covers part or all of accessibility modifications:
- VA Grants: Up to $109,986 for veterans
- Georgia Medicaid Waivers: NOW, COMP, ICWP, CCSP programs
- Medicare Advantage: Some plans cover home modifications
