Bathroom Safety for Seniors: Complete Fall Prevention Guide

Why Bathroom Falls Are the #1 Risk
The CDC reports that 1 in 4 adults over 65 falls each year, and the bathroom is the most dangerous room in the home. Wet, slippery surfaces combined with hard fixtures make bathroom falls particularly dangerous. The good news: most bathroom falls are preventable with proper modifications.
Essential Safety Modifications
- Grab bars ($150-$500 each): Install at toilet, shower entry, and inside shower/tub. Must be anchored to wall blocking, not just drywall. Support 250+ lbs
- Non-slip flooring: Replace smooth tile with textured porcelain (friction coefficient 0.6+). Add adhesive non-slip strips to existing surfaces as immediate measure
- Walk-in tub or roll-in shower: Eliminate the dangerous step-over of a traditional tub. Walk-in tubs ($3,000-$12,000) or roll-in showers ($5,000-$15,000)
- Comfort-height toilet: 17-19 inch seat height (vs standard 15 inches) makes sitting and standing easier. $250-$600 installed
- Improved lighting: Motion-sensor night lights, brighter overhead fixtures, and illuminated switches reduce disorientation
- Lever faucets: Replace round knobs with single-lever handles that are easier to grip and operate
